Link build
With space above their detached garage going to waste, Jon and Caroline wanted to create extra house space.
"We really wanted to make the room above the garage more accessible." Explains Jon. "It was a wonderful space but totally detached from the house." Built in 1992, the house is of fantastic proportions but the family felt that by linking the garage with the main house, the room could be utilised far better and provide them with far more flexibility as their family grows, as well as visually enlarge and enhance the house.
Without any preconceived ideas, the couple contacted the Myers Touch who worked with them to create a link build that would run between the two areas. With the design of the house being quite distinctive, the designer Keith suggested a classically modern looking structure that would work with the existing build yet would look good for years to come. "It was quite a major job," continues Jon, "So we knew we had to get it right first time."
Constructed from brick, carefully chosen to match the house, and a large expanse of glass, the area is striking in its own right. Flooding the area with light, the interior of the build has been kept simple so as not to detract from the existing space but also to enhance the beauty of the build. A simple wood and glass staircase, designed to echo the exterior stylishly links the main house to the rooms that lie above the garage.
"The design evolved over a few weeks as we discussed possibilities and it was vital that all the elements of the new build worked with what we already had," continues Jon, "We knew it had to fit the structure of the house but there had to be a modern edge to fit with the interior work that we had already done."
Once the structural design was complete, Interior Designer Liz helped them make the most of the new space. The hallway area of the link had to be hard wearing and Liz suggested using attractive stone flooring
that would last and look good for years to come. Inspired by the natural tones of wood and stone, the walls have been polished plastered in a neutral colour, creating the perfect backdrop for the stunning modern lighting that fills the stairwell.
With the area finished, the couple are delighted with the way the build works as well as looks. "The space is great in itself," enthuses Jon, "but the main benefit is that finally we can use the room on a regular basis."
