BRIEF

Matching heritage and architecture

In collaboration with the client’s architect, AR Design, the layout of the kitchen was already in place. However, upon meeting the client it was clear she wanted an island statement, symmetry in design and plenty of functional storage.

As well as a contemporary, family-friendly space it was also important the space still respected the heritage of the house.

CHALLENGE

Overcoming the issues

To meet Zoe’s brief for a design-conscious but functional kitchen, with a statement island and plenty of storage, Keith suggested filling the newly erected extension wall with an entire run of units. A large island with space to sit and chat could then be placed in front, and the remainder of the room dedicated to a dining area, with family snug beyond; creating a practical, sociable layout that still enables every inch of original brickwork and steel windows to be showcased within the room.

The handless units are finished in a timber-effect laminate to echo the warmth of the brick, while the integrated sink area and appliances are designed to keep the look uncluttered and without visual distraction. The addition of a mirrored splashback also helps create an illusion of extra space and has been strategically placed to reflect and link back to the snug so wherever the client is in the room there is still a sense of connection.

OUTCOME

A perfect centrepiece

Alongside the retained features, it is the island unit primarily designed to maximise storage with hidden internal drawers that is probably Zoe’s favourite feature. The sleek waterfall edges and textured back panel that can be illuminated at night makes it the perfect kitchen centrepiece to what is now the ideal space for modern family living – a place where they can all come together to cook, eat and relax with friends.
